Walter Banko

March 1, 1927 — December 10, 2008

Walter P. Banko, 81, of Everson, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at his home. He was born March 1, 1927 in Everson a son of the late Joseph and Anna Szaflarski Banko.
Mr. Banko retired from US Steel Irvin Works with over 30 years service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Phillipines with the US Navy Seabees. Walt was a longtime member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson and was a member of the Everson VFW.
He is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth "Betty" Kapura Banko to whom he was married 62 years; his four sons, Walter V. Banko and his wife Linda of Cincinatti, OH; James A. Banko and his wife Marylin of South Connellsville; Donald C. Banko and his wife Saundra of Connellsville; and Roger E. Banko and his wife Sandra of Preston, MD; eleven grandchildren, Jon, Rachel and Christina Banko; Kelly Stubbs; Jason and Michael Banko; Angela Black; Brian, Christopher, Jeannette and Daniel Banko; nine great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Denise Banko of Texas; a sister, Josephine Williams of Tennesse and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory M. Banko on January 31, 2004; three sisters, Sr. Mary Ottilia; Angeline Mientus and Anna Shurger; and three brothers, John Szaflarski; Joseph Szaflarski and Peter Banko.
Family and friends are welcome at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale (724-887-7110) on Thursday from 7-9 pm on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and on Saturday from 12 pm to 1:30 pm when Prayers of Transfer will be offered followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2 pm in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson with Fr. John A. Sedlak as celebrant. Committal services and interment will take place in St. Joseph RC Cemetery with military honors bestowed by the Southmoreland Veteran's Association.
