R. Wayne Shipley, Jr., 58 of Mt. Pleasant (East Huntingdon Township) passed away unnexpectedly Wednesday, March 5, 2008 of an apparent heart attack while on business in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Wayne was born March 9, 1949 in Somerset, the son of Edith R. Shipley of Berlin and the late R. Wayne (Jack) Shipley, Sr.

He was raised in Berlin where he graduated from Berlin-Brothers Valley High Scholl in 1967. He earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980.

He served with the US Peace Corps from 1971 to 1975 working primarily in Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

Wayne spent his entire professional career helping others in the area of Behavioral Health and Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Administration. His professional titles included Certified Addictions Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor. He began his administrative career as the Executive Director of Twin Lakes Drug and Alcohol Center in Somerset. He then worked with Gateway Rehabilitation Center, Aliquippa as the Director of Satellite Services. He further accepted the position as the Manager of Behavioral Health Services at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. His current position was the Director of the North East AddictionTechnology Transfer Center (NeATTC) and the Training Director for the Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment initiative with The Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions (IRETA), Pittsburgh.

A member of the Mt. Pleasant Church of God, Wayne was active in community affairs. He served on the board of directors of the Westmoreland Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Westmoreland Girl Scouts and was a member of the Laurel Highlands Regional Family YMCA. Wayne loved being involved with his children and over the years was frequently seen as a parent participant or as a spectator at many Southmoreland student sporting events and cultural programs. He loved socializing, enjoyed talking and telling stories.

In addition to his mother, Edith R. Shipley of Berlin, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Cheryl Byers Shipley; loving sons, Jacob Shipley of Columbus, OH; Dreyer Shipley of Mt. Pleasant and his adoring daughter, Elizabeth Shipley of Mt. Pleasant and her fiancAC. Ron Frederick; He will be greatly missed by his brother William Shipley and wife Janice; two sisters, Bonnie Foy and husband Jeff and Jeanne Leister and husband Fred; nieces Ginger Yeager, Angela Shipley and nephew Matthew Shipley all of Berlin; niece Krissy King and husband Brad of Somerset, nephew Sam Erny and wife Dusty of Longs, S.C., and several great nieces and nephews; and his mother in law, Imogene Byers of Mt. Pleasant.

Wayne's family and friends will always remember his laugh, smile and easygoing personality. He was a very special person who positively affected the lives of almost everyone he met.

Family and friends are welcome on Sunday from 2 to 8 pm at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St., Scottdale (724-887-7110) and on Monday from 10-11 am the hour of services in the Mt. Pleasant Church of God where the Rev. Timothy Beatty will officiate. Private committal services will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
