James D. "Jim" Newton, 60 of Scottdale, passed away and went to be with the Lord, Monday, October 11, 2010 in UPMC, Pittsburgh. He was born June 25, 1950 in Frankfort, KY a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Miller Newton.
Jim served in the US Navy, which included two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with bronze star and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a member of the Scottdale VFW Post 7781; Mt. Pleasant American Legion Post 446; Roadman-White American Legion Post 941 and it's American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of American Legion and the American Legion Riders; and also a member of the Scottdale Elks Lodge 777.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Thomas Newton.
He is survived by two sons, David Newton and wife Lisa of Scottdale; James Newton and wife Angela of Connellsville; two brothers, Robert Newton and wife Linda; John Newton and wife Teresa; and a sister, Barbara Jean and husband Bud Richie all of Frankfort, KY; four grandchildren, Ivy and Kahne Newton; Keith and Dylan Morgan and several, aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Family and friends are welcome on Thursday from 5 until 8 pm at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale (724-887-7110), where military honors will be bestowed at 8 pm by members of the Southmoreland Veterans Commission. Interment services with US Naval Honors will be rendered on Friday at 2:30 PM in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
