J. Nevin, Jr

J. Gordon Nevin, Jr. 98, formerly of Elizabeth and Scottdale (East Huntingdon Twp.), passed away, Thursday, July 15, 2010 in the Amber House, Mt. Pleasant. He was born October 15, 1911 in Elizabeth a son of the late James Gordon Nevin, Sr. and Mary Sloss Nevin. He graduated from Elizabeth High School, Westminster College and the University of Pittsburgh in the field of Public School Administration. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he had served for 39 years in the field of education. He was a teacher and administrator in the Elizabeth-Forward School District, Supervising Principal of East Huntingdon School District and Superintendent of the Southmoreland School District. While living in Elizabeth, he was a member of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church where he was an elder, Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the building committee of the present church; He was currently a member of Calvin United Presbyterian Church, Scottdale. He was active in community affairs and educational associations. He was honored by the East Huntingdon Lions' Club in 1996 as a 50-year member and has served in the Lions for over 60 years. He was inducted into the Elizabeth Forward School Hall of Fame. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marian F. Nevin in 1999; three sisters, Lucille Nevin Smith in 1997; Marie Nevin Johnston in 1984 and Ruth E. Nevin in 2008. He is survived by two sons, James G. Nevin III and his wife Lois Sorg Nevin of Monongahela; Dr. Robert J. Nevin and his wife Wilma Spohn Nevin of Ligonier; his daughter-in-law, Kay B. Nevin of Latrobe; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; and a sister, Doris E. Nevin of Greensburg; and several cousins, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are welcome at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale (724-887-7110) on Friday from 4 to 8 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 10 am the hour of funeral services with Rev. Dr. Jane Lynn Young officiating. Chapel committal services and interment will follow at Noon Saturday in the Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Calvin United Presbyterian Church, Chestnut & Mulberry Sts. Scottdale, PA 15683 or a charity of one's choice.
