Gertrude Prince

Gertrude Prince was the third of four daughters born in Sharon Pennsylvania July 11, 1921 to George of present day Ukraine and Esther Nagy Benko of Gyor Hungary . Life was difficult in those days, made even more difficult by the death of her mother when she was only two. Gertrude and her two not much older sisters Betty, formerly of Bell Acres, Pennsylvania and Eleanor, now deceased, were taken to the Mars Orphanage Home where they were visited regularly by their father. Betty, now of Columbus, Ohio may have only been two years older but she saw herself as "the boss" prodding and encouraging Gertrude to attend and graduate from nursing school. The youngest sister, Mary, now of Oroville , California , ten months old, was adopted. The three daughters never stopped trying to find their baby sister, finally connecting thirty years later. They remain in close contact.
Gertrude married in the 40's but alas her husband died shortly afterward. At that time she was living in Rochester New York where she worked in industry. Yet she was surrounded by loving family, Eleanor Lockwood who lived in Rochester with her three boys, Bob, Allen and Cade and sister Elisabeth Anderson and her daughter, Vickie who lived in the Pittsburgh area. Vickie remembers with great fondness her aunt Gertrude defying her sister by slipping her delicious almond crescent cookies when she was a child.
Later in the 80's, Gertrude moved to the Pittsburgh area to be closer to her sister, Betty. She ultimately ended up in beautiful Bear Rocks where she returned to her nursing roots. Gertrude had a great fondness for animals; no one spoiled or loved her pets more. She is survived by sisters Elisabeth Anderson of Columbus Ohio , Mary McMillan of Oroville California . She is also survived by Eleanor's children, local resident Robert Lockwood, who was like a son to her, Cade (Carol) Lockwood of Utah, Allen (Annette) Lockwood of Harrisburg and Betty's daughter, Vickie (Robert) Billings of Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
