Emma Jean (Gerbin) Kovacs, 85 of Scottdale, passed away, Monday, May 15, 2017 at Easy Living Estates, New Stanton. Mrs. Kovacs was born May 1, 1932 in Monessen a daughter of the late Nicholas and Katherine (Barbir) Gerbin.
Emma was a 1951 graduate of Monessen High School and a 1953 graduate of California Teachers College. She taught first grade in the Monessen and Connellsville school districts and was also a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alex E. Kovacs and a sister Mary Steele.
She is survived by her loving family, a son, James Kovacs and his wife Kimberly (Shotts); her grandson Samuel J. Kovacs; brothers, Paul Nick Gerbin and Leonard Gerbin; sisters, Barbara Gerbin Costello and Kay Gerbin Ferris. Additionally, she is survived by a sister in law, Dolores Kovacs Sebastian and her husband Carmine, as well as, several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL & CREAMTION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, where prayers of transfer will be said on Friday at 9:15 am followed by Emma Jean’s funeral Mass at 10 am in St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard J. Kosisko as celebrant. A Parish Wake service will be held on Thursday at 3 pm in the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Visitation Church Cemetery.
