Brady Jakob Hunker, 18, born May 6, 2001 of Mount Pleasant Township and Grove City was received into the loving arms of Jesus on November 25, 2019 after a 3-year battle with Ewings Sarcoma, a childhood bone cancer.
Brady is a 2019 graduate of Mount Pleasant Area High School graduating in the top 2% of his class. Brady attended Grove City College as a member of the Trustee Scholar program majoring in Mechanical Engineering until the progression of his illness forced him to stop classes. He loved Grove City where he and Mollie made their home for the last three months. Brady received many academic and athletic scholarships, including the UPMC Comeback Player of the Year and Pittsburgh Positive Athlete and two-year Trib Total Media Outstanding Young Citizen award and medal.
Brady loved playing hockey. He began playing at the age of five as part of the Allegheny Badgers ice hockey Association. He became passionate for inline hockey playing for the Inferno travel team, Mt Pleasant Viking hockey, and Hempfield Spartan hockey where he served as team captain. He was named three times to the NAYRHL All-Star teams and was awarded the 2016 Championship MVP.
Brady has a love of import cars and working on them with his Dad. He also enjoyed playing guitar and piano, dirt bike riding, snowboarding, mountain biking, camping, BMX racing, and Penguin hockey.
Brady loved attending camps and retreats at Jumonville where he has attended camp every year for the past eleven years and has made so many memories and friends in Christ. This is also where he proposed to Mollie. He has always said Jumonville was his favorite place to be ever.
After his diagnosis in 2016, Brady became very active in Childhood Cancer Awareness, speaking at many fundraising events for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Oncology Department and Relay for Life.
Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Brady knew his smile could light up a room. His comedic personality, and most importantly, his love of Jesus and unending, unwavering faith in the Lord. He is a life-long member of New Stanton Church. Brady served in many ways as praise team pianist, youth praise guitarist, Youth Ministry team Mission Chairperson and a member of New Stanton Church Amp’s Student Ministry. He and Mollie have also visited other local churches to give their testimony and share with others their musical gift. When he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 15, he made a commitment to his family that he was going to show people Jesus through his journey, which he definitely accomplished!
Brady is survived by the love of his life and his soulmate, his wife, Mollie Landman Hunker whom he married July 20, 2019. A day that allowed their dreams to come true. God knew the plans he had for Brady and blessed them both by falling in love in 7th grade. Mollie was by his side and was his “Mollie medicine” every step of his battle.
Brady is also survived by his parents Chris and Jen Hunker, who are so blessed to be able to have 18 wonderful years on this Earth with him and who are so overwhelmingly proud. His sister Laney Hunker who knew Brady was her super- hero. His Grandparents, ”Nanna and Pap Pap”, Barry and Mary Lou Shaw and his “Grammy” Lorrie Hunker all of Scottdale. His Aunt and Uncle Vickie and Adam Mates of Jackson, WY. His father and mother in law, Pastor Randy and Dawn Landman of West Newton. Sisters- in-law, Malorie and Mylie Landman of West Newton. Grandma- in- law, Vera Dolan of Fairchance. His Godparents, Mike and Jennifer Barrick of Mount Pleasant. Also surviving are all his great uncles, aunts and cousins that he loves which include, our “big, crazy, loving family” - Janice Barkley, Carl and Mary Beth Stouffer family, Dave and Karen Wasil family, Ed and Kim Wasil family, and Tim and Terri Pisula family. And his fur brother, Badger, who would never leave Brady’s side for hours at a time, even on the bad days, but was always up to play on the good days.
Honoring Brady’s request, there will be a Memorial Service to celebrate and honor his life and share the memories he created for all of us at the New Stanton Church, 612 South Center Ave, New Stanton, on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Steve Bane.
Brady requested donations in his memory be made to Jumonville Camp and Christian Center at jumonville.org/contribute.
