George Brown

George D. Brown, 87, of Scottdale, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, November 15, 2016.  He was born February 8, 1929 in Ruffsdale, the son of the late Donald Duane and Rhoda (Cavanaugh) Brown.

George received a B.S. in Geology from Earlham College, and was a guard on their football team.  Following college, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Vulcan and had an opportunity to see the world.   After returning home, he married his wife and had 2 children.  He worked as a General Foreman Metallurgist/Melter at Crucible Steel in Midland, PA for 26 years where he was fondly referred to as “Big Hoss” because of his formidable size and soft heart.

His family was everything to him and every little detail and accomplishment of each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought him tremendous joy.  He was lucky enough to find the love of not one but two great women, Ann Steiner, his wife who passed after 32 years of marriage, and Louise Cochran, his original high school sweetheart and beloved companion for the last 22 years.  He loved football, gardening, hunting, fishing, driving around exploring the world, and being with people.   He never met a stranger; he had a talent for drawing people out immediately after meeting them and making friends.  He was constantly characterized as a caring and great guy.  He had an incredible will to continue pushing forward despite any obstacles he faced and did it with a positive attitude.  He lived every minute of his life to the fullest with love, integrity, and happiness.  He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, E. Ann (Steiner) Brown and a brother, Pete Brown.

He is survived by his children, a son, Mark Brown and his wife N. Denise; a daughter, Kimberly Gallagher and her husband Cliff; his grandchildren, Sara Brown, Nichol Laskey (Anthony) and Maureen and Hope Smith; two great –grandchildren, Nicholas and Andria Laskey; his longtime devoted companion, Louise Cochran; a sister, Sally Wagner (Ed); a brother, Charles Edward Brown (Nina); his sister-in-law, Peggy Brown and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 1-3 & 5-7 pm at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 303 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale.  A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11 am in the Beaver Cemetery, 351 Buffalo St. Beaver, Pa with Pastor Leonard Morgan officiating.
